5 Ways to Support Small Businesses During the Coronavirus Shutdown

How do you support our local economy from the comfort (and safety) of your home? We have some ideas:

Shop online. Does your favorite local coffee shop have a website you can order from? Although we all love Amazon ask yourself this first: Could I get this from a local store and are they now offering online shopping? Not sure? Check the company’s website and social media pages as many business owners have turned to this offering in order to keep their businesses afloat amid statewide business directives. You can also check out Buy for Tomorrow Today, created by the Economic Development Department, which is a one-stop shop to Buy NM Local. An online purchase with your credit card will help the small business as well as give you the opportunity to boost your member rewards.

Buy gift cards. You may not feel comfortable ordering takeout or delivery during this time. Even so, you can still support your favorite local restaurant: pay now, eat later by purchasing a gift card. Think of it as a way to plan your first meal back into the world once the dust settles. Your support now could help your favorite business reopen in the future.

Leave a Facebook or Yelp Review. Not only is this free to you, this is extremely valuable to local businesses everywhere, as you are encouraging others to visit when they’re back in action.

Be a good neighbor. Safety and support go a long way during challenging times. Check in with your neighbors. Have they experienced job loss or a drop in income? Ask if there is a fundraiser you can contribute to. If you know of any financial resources, be sure to share those, too. Or maybe your neighbors are unable to stay home with their children right now. Ask if you can help with childcare if you have the means to do so.

Donations are always appreciated. Many nonprofits have also needed to limit their services, as our current emergency directives put too many people in a close setting. By donating your time, essential items as food, or just cash – you’ll help provide access to service many of our community members desperately need right now.
