Summer is usually an exciting time for families: the kids are out of school, the weather is warm and sunny, and by now, we’re all ready to take some time off and experience some fun in the sun. But as you know, this is not a typical year. If you’ve canceled your previously scheduled vacation plans – it may be a source of disappointment.
However, you may want to consider these alternative ideas for a staycation for a little pick-me-up:
Get moving. A key to creating a vacation-like experience at home is planning activities you typically enjoy when you’re away, which don’t have to cost a lot by the way. There are plenty of free activities you can take advantage of without traveling far - such as a bike ride, hike or walk. While these things may not be in a vacation destination, when combined with unplugging from work, it can help you achieve that vacation feeling.
Soak up the sun. Were you planning on a beach getaway pre-COVID-19? Don’t set aside that paperback you were saving for the sand just yet. Pack a cooler with snacks and icy drinks. Fill up the kiddie pool, lay down your beach blanket in the sunniest corner of the yard, slather on sunscreen and find just the right ambient sound on an app like Naturespace and listen to the waves crashing on your own, man-made beach.
Take a tasting tour. It’s easy to settle into a routine of dining at your favorite restaurants, so why not break out of that rut and spend an entire day expanding your palate? The beauty of this culinary adventure lies in its flexibility. You can plan your itinerary or play it loose and go wherever your taste buds take you.
Stop and smell the roses. When was the last time you stopped to smell the roses? Maybe you’re up for digging in and tending to your own backyard. But if that sounds more like work than a staycation, how about a walk-by tour of some of the most beautiful gardens in your hometown? Afterward, enjoy a refreshing lemonade or tea!
Host a mini movie festival. Set aside a lazy day or evening to enjoy movies without a care in the world, and don't forget the popcorn! Pick a theme, like Oscar winners, 80s coming-of-age flicks, or Disney classics and choose 2–3 films. Does anyone have a projector you could borrow so you can watch it on a wall — or even outside after dark on the side of your house?
A healthy and happy family staycation is U.S. Eagle’s hope for all our members. We’d also like to remind you to observe recommended practices and social distancing whenever you leave home and keep up that frequent handwashing.
