Don't let the media fool you; school is cool, and it's even cooler when you get free money for tuition, books, and living expenses. We know that school isn't cheap, but we also know that higher education is one of the ways we're going to build a better future for our state. That's why we have created a scholarship program to allow New Mexico students to open the door to more opportunities.
Congratulations to our 2022 Scholarships recipients. Learn more about our recipients below:
Build a Branch - Recipient: Aydriane Vigil
Award Amount: $2,000
Scholarship Description: New Mexico covers 121,356 square miles, with an estimated population of 2,095,428 people – 686,089 living in rural New Mexico (USDA-ERS). These rural areas face struggles related to demographic changes, land use and environment, workforce development, capital access, infrastructure, health, and community preservation. These challenges make individuals in rural areas more likely to fall victim to predatory lending practices like payday or title loans. Your task is to identify a rural New Mexico community (by definition of the U.S. Census https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/urban-rural.html ) with two or fewer financial institutions. Build a Credit Union Branch in this community to provide access to products and resources. Your budget is $1M. Consider the following in your essay:
- What services and products do you offer?
- What marketing strategies can you use?
- How do you gain trust in your community and stand out?
- How do you handle staffing challenges due to the low population?
- You completed your plan and realized you went over the budget. What measures do you take to cut costs?
